The 62 mile ride features climbs and beautiful vistas, along with gorgeous farmland. And this charity ride has a twist: the Rest stops are hosted by local farms serving local food samples! The route boasts stunning vistas, quiet country roads and paved greenways. The 15 mile route is similar, with just 2 "Farm Stops" and easier terrain. And, this is one of the few rides where you can “ride to the start” from any of the hotels or B&Bs. Come for the ride; stay for the weekend!
The Black Mountain–Fairview–Old Fort area is rich in tradition, history, and local farmers that are provisioning our restaurants, stores, and families. This innovative ride combines our love of climbing and descending on these beautiful roads, with eating the fabulous food these intrepid farmers are producing.
On the event website you will find plenty of information on how to get the most out of this event: participating restaurants and lodging are offering substantial discounts to participants, great places to eat and drink, all kinds of fun activities for members of your party that choose not to ride, and how to volunteer. Great local food, great local beer, great local shopping, and great local riding! This event is for charity – proceeds go to the Black Mountain Greenways, which in concert with their colleagues in Old Fort, provide a portion of the 62 mile route on car-free, beautiful paved paths through green, green foliage. Social Rides • "These are designed to be leisurely so we can all chat while we pedal, and catch up on our lives, especially bicycle adventures. It’s a perfect venue for beginners or those returning to road riding after an absence. We emphasize safety, learning or re-learning tips for riding as a group, and keeping everyone together."
Training Rides • "These follow a progression from easy (about 20 miles) to difficult (a century, with 5,000ft+ of climbing) so that you can build your legs, and your skills. We emphasize safety on these rides too, and can provide tips and techniques for safe riding as a group, dealing with cars, fueling your body appropriately and even choosing equipment. We often conclude with a no-host meal at a convenient restaurant (optional, of course)."
Fun Rides • "Often on Saturdays, we’ll schedule a ride to explore a new location or meet a specific goal, such as climbing to the summit of Mt Mitchell. We’ll let you know the “Fitness Level” required for these rides, and as with all of our rides, no one gets left behind."
DAY TOURS • We love to show visitors the low-traffic, country roads that access the natural beauty of Western North Carolina. Not only are the routes chosen for their beauty, but these tours include stops at local farms and artist galleries!
CUSTOM DAY TOURS • Don’t see exactly what you’d like, or can’t make your schedule work with ours? We can usually build a custom day tour that meets your special needs, including incorporating your non-rider spouse, partner, or companion.
CUSTOM MULTI-DAY TOURS • Want to spend more than a day riding through our beautiful country with your friends on a multi-day tour? We will craft a custom option that will create an unforgettable experience.
EVENTS • Velo Girl Rides provides event management services for cycling events. We’ve been doing this for years, combining our talents for organization and safety with our experience riding in, volunteering, and running large events.
CYCLE TO FARM • Cycle To Farm is a unique cycling experience. Enjoy a challenging and beautiful route with Farm Stops along the way offering a taste of local food.
BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY TOUR END–TO–END • We’ve had very strong interest in this ride of a lifetime — prominent on many “must ride” lists. 469 miles of beautiful, constantly curving and turning road, twisting through the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains.
BICYCLE RENTALS • When I travel, I’ve found that sometimes the cost of renting is less than the cost of transporting my bike. If you want to consider that, keep in mind that Velo Girl Rides does not offer bicycle rentals, but we can highly recommend Liberty Bicycles for high-quality bike rentals.
ABOUT VELO GIRL RIDES • My name is Jennifer Caldwell-Billstrom and I became a runner in 1999 when I realized that I needed a healthy outlet. My brother kept urging me to try cycling, but I was convinced that running was my one and only true love and I resisted. But he was persistent and I eventually purchased a Trek hybrid bike and began to ride. The first “distance” ride that I took on my bike covered twenty nearly flat miles and I was hooked.
