Rocky Knob Mountain Bike Park • When complete Rocky Knob will host 6-8 miles of mountain bike trails, three shelters, an adventure playground, and picnic areas.
Rocky Knob is an 185 acre park in Boone, North Carolina. In 2010, Watauga County, in partnership with the Watauga County Tourism Development Authority, received a $500,000 grant from the North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund to assist with the acquisition and development for Rocky Knob Park. In 2009 two $5,000 grants were secured from the Bikes Belong Foundation and Specialized Bicycles These grants were made possible through the WCTDA’s partnership with Boone Area Cyclists, a local nonprofit organization working to promote and develop cycling opportunities throughout the Boone area.
Funding for the park was derived from a 6-percent occupancy tax levied on short term lodging rentals in Watauga County by the TDA. That revenue was then leveraged to receive a $500,000 grant from N.C. Parks and Recreation Trust Fund. Also, two $5,000 grants were secured from Bikes Belong Foundation and Specialized Bicycles, which were made accessible through the TDA’s partnership with Boone Area Cyclists.
