North Carolina Specialty Foods Association, The Mast Farm InnSamson’s Sauce

• Pleasant Garden, North Carolina • Samson’s Sauce dates back 78 years to the attic of the former Boren home on the fashionable Oakland Avenue in Greensboro, N. C. Head of that particular household, Simpson Boren was a family man and father of three sons – Malcolm, Gurney, and Jimmy. He loved fishing, dove hunting, and gourmet cooking. In fact, this wonderful sauce was concocted because Simpson was always experimenting in the kitchen! He first made it in a barrel in the attic and let it age for two months while dutifully stirring it everyday. News of Simpson’s mysterious, pending treat spread quickly throughout the community. • www.samsonsauce.com

North Carolina Specialty Foods Association, The Mast Farm InnSweet Neecy

• Chapel Hill, North Carolina • www.facebook.com/pages/Sweet-Neecy-Cakes/369508352633 • I am grateful that when I was a young girl, growing up back in the sixties in Chapel Hill, NC. I had the opportunity to watch both my grandmother and mother baking delicious homemade cakes from scratch. I watched as they both "made do", measuring the flour and sugar with a coffee cup or with a glass. They would then use the palm of their hands to measure the baking powder, soda and salt because back then cooking and baking was by feel and touch. According to my mama this type of measuring was called "dump" cooking. • www.sweetneecy.com

Blowin’ Smoke BBQ Saucewww.facebook.com/pages/Blowin-Smoke-BBQ-Sauce/107265969299351www.blowinsmokebbqsauce.com • In April 2008, I retired from full-time employment and started the process of marketing and producing “Blowin’ Smoke” BBQ sauce. The name originates from our two new daughters-in-law who suggested the name “Blowin’ Smoke”. I disagreed with the name because while the sauce is sweet and spicy; it is not hot. They explained that they believed that I was just “blowin’ smoke” with my talk of manufacturing the sauce. I tried to find a better name, but I was outvoted 5-1, so “Blowin’ Smoke” it is. A customized logo by a local Rowan County artist, Betty Sedberry, completed the packaging. Additionally, the sauce qualifies as a “Goodness Grows in North Carolina” product as its principal ingredients originate in North Carolina.
