Little Grey Line
Little Grey Line • Little Grey Line transforms no-longer-used button-down dress shirts into sophisticated, yet playful, heirloom quality garments for girls. Little Grey Line is a finalist for THE 2014 MARTHA STEWART AMERICAN MADE AWARDS. • "Little Grey Line is a new concept in children’s clothing that was born from a pile of my husband’s work shirts. Minutes away from their second life in a thrift store, it dawned on me that there was nothing wrong with each shirt other than the fact that they were too big. To him, each piece had lost its initial usefulness but to me they had not lost their memory. I wanted to figure out a way to give them new life. A sustainable, resourceful design solution emerged as a dress for my then two year old daughter, Adeline Grey. Since that first dress, Little Grey Line continues to seek out the unique features of each shirt and incorporate them into one-of-a-kind, treasured children’s wear. Each garment, through its previous life, has a story and one of the personal joys of making each piece is sharing its memory. I design and hand-fabricate each Little Grey Line artifact and I look forward to sharing each design and story with you." ~ Jessica Johnson Moore
"My light-filled home studio is located in Raleigh, North Carolina. I stay home full-time with my two children (ages 2 and 5) so carving out sewing time is a bit complicated and ebbs and flows depending on the day (or night!). My background is in architecture and while I loved the challenge of designing buildings, the time-frame from creation of idea to seeing that idea come to fruition can be staggeringly long. Through Little Grey Line, each garment, with its own unique design, completes the cycle from design to finished dress in a matter of hours. It is a very fulfilling and gratifying process. Most of my work is custom meaning Little Grey Line customers send me their beloved shirt and I transform it for them into a design of their choosing within 2-3 weeks. Each step of the process from start (developing each design, making patterns, deconstructing the original shirt) to finish (carefully pressing the completed dress and making the tag) is made by my two hands."
